About six years after it was launched is finally on its last legs. According to a report by Google, is set to shut down support for the first-generation and it won’t receive any major updates. Those who have the first-generation Chromecast don’t have to fret too much though.
Google, as per the 9to5Google report, has confirmed that the first-generation Chromecast will continue to get updates related to bugs and security fixes. In other words, new features won’t arrive on the first-generation Chromecast but still receive minor updates.
In an official statement to 9to5Google, the company said that, “Chromecast recently celebrated its 6th birthday. We’re thrilled that some of our earliest adopters are still enjoying the first-generation device, and we continue to update it with bug and security fixes.” Google, since the launch of Chromecast, has naturally upgraded it with new variants.
Two new variants of the Chromecast have been launched since then. First one came in 2015 and the most-recent was in 2018. In addition to this, a Ultra variant and an audio-only Chromecast Audio has also been unveiled.
The Google report arrived at the conclusion that Chromecast won’t get any updates after detailing through the firmware version of every Chromecast that has been launched. The report states that the original Chromecast device is on a much lower update compared to the other Chromecast devices. “While all the other Chromecast hardware is on version 1.40.156414, the 1st Gen Chromecast is all the way back on version 1.36.157768,” the report notes.
Meanwhile, the next big hardware update from Google is the launch of Google Nest Hub in India. The company has reiterated that India remains an important market. “India is a very important market.
